Tornadoes storming the house

Tornadoes are threatening Tennessee today, Thursday, March 25. Dyersburg High School has canceled all extracurricular activities after 5 p.m. However, stressful weather combined with everyone at home brews the perfect storm for petty arguments.

But there are other ways to escape this climate than watching TikToks in your room.

Storms are perfect family movie-time. Horror films are scarier when the weather is already frightening. Comedy shows do the opposite by being a distraction--and things are funnier when others are laughing too. Childhood movies are a warm hug, teleporting us to a happier day.

Well, the power is out. What now?

From Scrabble to Hungry Hungry Hippos, classic board games do not need electricity to spark connections between you and your relatives. Irritation with your siblings becomes friendly competition, and teaming up is a fun way to bond. Monopoly might not be the best idea, though--

Okay, okay, the tornado is coming. Nobody wants to play Bingo anymore. What now?

Time to go to the safest room in the house. Make sure you bring snacks, water, phones and portable chargers.

“We have a tornado shelter that we go down into, and then my mom tries to get a signal on her phone to check the weather. We play music and listen sometimes. My sister and I might play checkers on our phones together. We also take all our pets down there--two cats and one dog down there too. It’s not a very big shelter: probably about five feet wide and six feet long,” senior Sydney Peckenpaugh said.

But is this not the ideal environment for arguments? Everyone in one room. A tornado ripping through town. No space to breathe. How can we possibly avoid an argument right now?

We do not. We embrace it.

“When we get in our safe room, we complain and get on each other’s nerves. We just act like idiots. It helps us ignore what’s going on outside,” senior Breuklyn Stone said.

Family gets on our nerves, and times like these makes them even more annoying. But they also remind us that every argument--every pet peeve, annoyance, irritation--is worth it.

So stay safe. Stay inside. And stay together.

As of 2:45 p.m, the forecast shows storms throughout the South. Light to medium rains are predicted to continue over the next five days, but medium and heavy rains should not be a problem.
