On Thursday night, The Dyersburg High School Lady Trojans fell to the South Gibson High School Lady Hornets in the District 14 Tournament finals. After 80 hard-fought minutes, the game finished 2-1, marking only the third loss in the Lady Trojans season. Junior striker Anna Staggs scored the lone goal for DHS.
Following the game, several Lady Trojans were honored with awards for their performances in the district. Freshman Zainab Manneh was awarded Offensive Player of the Year while Senior Elizabeth McDonald was named Defensive Player of the Year. Freshmen Amber Vazquez and Lindsey Vazquez were selected to the All-District team. Seniors Aria Cloar and Breuklyn Stone, junior Anna Staggs, and freshmen Virginia Kerber and Anna Fisher were tapped as members of the All-Tournament team. Sophomore Addie Hurt was named to both the All-District and All-Tournament teams. Head coach Musa Manneh rounded out DHS’ awards, earning Coach of the Year.
“You give everything your best effort. Sometimes it’s going to work out how you want it, sometimes you're going to fall short, that’s the human condition. These girls fought hard, I'm really, really proud. We get the chance to shock the world on Tuesday.” Coach Manneh said.
Despite the loss, the Lady Trojans still have a path to the state championship. The team continues their postseason campaign on Thursday, October 22 at Chester County High School in the Region 7 tournament final.
