Country music star Morgan Wallen has faced substantial backlash following a video of the singer using a racially-charged word in reference to a friend.
Early February 1, Wallen returned home with several friends after a night of going out in Nashville, Tennessee. The men started to yell and honk car horns outside the house, to the point that Wallen’s neighbors began to video them. Visually and audibly intoxicated, Wallen stumbles toward the door of his home. Wallen turns around to yell at a friend to take care of another in the car, referring to him as the ‘n-slur’, while he goes in to grab some things. TMZ then obtained and released the footage.
The repercussions from this incident were swift for Wallen. Over 100 country music radio stations pulled his music from their airways. Both the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association have deemed him ineligible to receive any awards. Record company Republic Records have indefinitely suspended his contract with them.
Wallen has since apologized for the incident, saying “there are no excuses to use this type of language. I promise to do better.”
This is the latest in a string of controversies that Wallen has been at the center of, including partying maskless following a University of Alabama football game in Tuscaloosa, Alabama in October of last year, which led to him being pulled from being a musical guest for the October 12 edition of Saturday Night Live.
