Model UN at DHS

Dyersburg High School has many clubs that students can join and be active in. Model United Nations is made up of delegates from Dyersburg High School that represent different countries. The students make resolutions to help solve issues within their country.

For example, sophomore Patrick Healy, who represents Maldives and Armenia, worked to make a resolution to solve controlling Maldives’ debt and to have Armenia recognize a past genocide.

It has taken from August 12th to December 3rd for students to prepare for the official conference. The writing process can either take days or hours depending on the person.

“The resolution took three hours of writing and refining and the introduction took thirty minutes,” Healy said.

Delegates can be recognized as outstanding if they ask many questions about the resolutions. This can lead to friendly competition between different students.

“I have an interest in Model UN but not enough to ask more questions than the people who have more of an interest in it than me,” Healy said.

Plans are made before the conference so students have better confidence walking into it. Healy has his own way of making plans.

“Make as many enemies as possible then tell them that I’m friends with other delegates and vice versa, so everyone hates everyone by the end of the first day,” Healy said.

Model UN takes hours of hard work to complete, but it is all worth it in the end. Students take time to learn about real-world problems and how they can be solved.
