Coach Tim Strayhorn’s and Coach Baline Mahaffey’s teams played Crockett County in
Saturday's district matchups. Mahaffey’s squad pulled off the upset, but unfortunately, Strayhorn’s team lost.
Strayhorn’s team had a hot first half, outscoring Crockett 22-18. Chelby Jordan and Joya Crawford had 7 and 6 points, respectively. Netala Dixson also had 4 of her 6 total points in the first quarter. The Lady Trojans had a 10-point lead going into the 4th quarter, but could not hold on. The Crockett County offense exploded for 22 points in the fourth quarter- to Dyersburg’s 8 points- to defeat the Lady Trojans. The leading scorers were Chelby Jordan-13 points- and Joya Crawford-10 points.
Saturday was a big game for Mahaffey’s squad; Crockett County is a district rival and the number 2 team in the state. The #9 ranked Trojans tied the #2 Cavaliers in the first quarter 10-10. Jaylon Brown and Breyden Turnage combined for 6 of the Trojans’ 10 points. Crockett outscored Mahaffey’s squad 12-6 in the second quarter to have a 22-16 lead going into halftime. The Trojans rallied in the third quarter and scored 17 points. Mahaffey’s squad took the momentum from a big Breyden Turnage dunk and outscored Crockett in the fourth quarter 11-9. Ace Mahaffey sealed the game with a near buzzer-beater 3 to give the Trojans the lead with 4.9 seconds left. The Trojans held Crockett County on the last possession and upset the #2 team in the state 44-42. The leading scorers were Jaylon Brown- 12 points- Breyden Turnage- 9 points- Ace Mahaffey- 8 points.
Both Trojan teams face district rival Obion County on the road Tuesday night.
