Joelle Joanie "Jojo" Siwa came out as queer on January 21, 2021 by posting a TikTok with members of the PrideHouseLA, a group of queer creators. During another TikTok video with over 5.9 million likes, she sang about being “born this way,” referencing a popular song by Lady Gaga. After a few days, Siwa posted an Instagram video thanking her fans for the love she has received.

Says claims to be the happiest she has ever been, her instagram bio states, “Happies human alive.” The 17 year old has gotten overwhelming amounts of love and acceptance in the past week, along with an uncanny number of hate comments. Siwa has blocked all the hate out and continues to focus on the good.

Some are happy for her, while others see the decision as trend following or irrelevant.

“I think it’s a bad decision to come out on her part because many of the parents of her viewers do not agree with the idea of people who are attracted to the same sex,” an anonymous DHS student said.

Some students have thought deeply about her decision, while others have no idea she has come out.

“I didn’t even know that,” junior Erick Martinez said.

Jojo Siwa’s announcement has allowed her to grow closer, more open and more honest with her followers.
