On January 20, Joseph R. Biden was sworn in as the 46th President of the United States on the balcony of the United States Capitol Building. Senator Kamala Harris was also sworn in as the 49th and first female Vice President of the United States.
The ceremony opened with a benediction from Reverend Silvester Beamon, a Vermont native and close friend of Biden. Pop singer Lady Gaga sang the national anthem, with fellow performers Jennifer Lopez and country singer Garth Brooks also lending their talents during the ceremony.
Biden was sworn in by Chief Justice of the Supreme Court John Roberts Jr., while Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor swore in Harris. Biden then gave a speech calling for unity among a divided nation.
Many former Presidents and their wives were present for the ceremony. Barack and Michelle Obama, George and Laura Bush and Bill and Hillary Clinton were all present at the Capitol. Outgoing Vice President Mike Pence and his wife, Karen, were also in attendance. Outgoing President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania were notably absent from the ceremony. The couple departed from Washington D.C. to his Mar-a-Lago Club in Florida early in the morning.
President Biden and Vice President Harris now commence a possibly turbulent job for the next four years— or longer— until the next inauguration on January 20, 2025.
