Students of the Generation 1 program of Dyersburg High School have recently toured several colleges including the University of Memphis, Lane College, and UT Martin. The Generation 1 program is for students at Dyersburg High School who are within the first generation of their family to attend college and hold a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
"My favorite campus was the University of Memphis, however the UT Martin trip was overnight and we had more time to be in the actual facilities, which made it a lot more fun and informative," senior Yamilett Llamas said.
The program is sponsored by Curriculum Coordinator Seela Newbill and Assistant Principal and mentor, Dr. Tina Williams. The Generation 1 program also prepares the students for their academic future by assisting with the college application process and teaching them about college life itself.
"The Gen 1 program has helped me a lot, personally, because without it I don't think I would've toured a single college, but with the program, I am now deciding between 2 of them," Llamas said, "This program is definitely worth sponsoring for more students in the future because it is more than just college tours. It can also help with the application essay and general college life which I think many people forget about."
This is the first time the Generation 1 program has been implemented at Dyersburg High School. As it already seems to be making a huge impact, the program will continue to assist students in their academic journey for years to come.
First-generation students attended an overnight trip to UT Martin in June where they learned about not only college, but dorm life and the college experience.
First generation college students toured Lane College and The University of Memphis this week to expand their options in their college search. Several of the students have said they plan to attend one of the three that they toured recently.
