FCA bringing hope and uniting students

Hope is crucial in stressful times. For many students and teachers at Dyersburg High School, this silver lining is FCA: Fellowship of Christian Athletes. FCA met before school on Friday, October 2, in the West Wing, brought together by Christianity.

The second meeting of the year tackled the pandemic’s uncertainty. Because of COVID-19, sports games are canceled. Students are sent home for weeks for quarantine. Club activities are restricted. A negative mindset is easy to fall into, but FCA provides a place of warmth.

“Even though I have to get up a little bit early on my Friday, I always enjoy going to FCA because it starts my day off with a positive mindset. This year is obviously not expected. I try to make the best of it since we will not be getting all the little things that make it special. Some days are harder than others, but through FCA, all that stress goes away. I have a place of fellowship with my friends and listen to Jesus,” senior Maclyn Boals said.

The topic of staying positive was especially important in the meeting.

“We all have the ability to leave lasting impressions on the people around us, and it is up to us whether we make that a positive or negative impression,” teacher TJ VanDyke, who gave a sermon at the meeting, said.

As the year progresses, students look forward to further meetings--a routine in the midst of an ever changing world. A sense of togetherness is crucial to staying motivated in not only school, but life.

“With COVID-19, we hardly get normalcy. Having regular meets will be nice!” senior Mattie Gregson said.

FCA plans to continue its bi-monthly Friday morning meetings, giving students and teachers a place to connect to not only each other, but themselves and Christianity.
