Dyersburg hosts annual carnival

As this year’s annual carnival in Dyer County was held, many concerns arose about whether or not the event should have been held. Although attending the yearly carnival is a tradition held by many, reasons relating to COVID-19 and sanitation concerns everyone within the town, even the ones who did not attend the event.

Many people hold different opinions about the event.

“I think that the Dyer County Fair was closed this year for a reason; cases of the virus are not going down and we can not pretend it does not exist anymore. It’s why we are in this situation to begin with,” senior Laython Holder said.

Using this logic, many within the population saw the carnival as an unattractive event this year.

With the entire nation fighting the battle against COVID-19, many people speculate what the effects of the carnival will do to the number of COVID-19 cases.

“It would be foolish to believe that people will truly keep six feet of distance between each other. From personal observations, friends do not keep distance or wear masks when spending time together,” Junior Holly Hoffman said.

From this reasoning, holding the carnival this year will likely increase the number of cases since many people will not likely follow the COVID-19 safety precautions.

Many reasons beyond the spread of COVID-19 affect people’s decisions in attending this event.

“I did not attend for the benefit of my own personal health, and I have a family that I enjoy spending time with and would be devastated if I could not see them or even worse, gave them COVID,” senior Madelyn Webb said.

Not only does COVID-19 affect people’s health, but it affects people’s daily life as it results in them getting treatment and quarantining themselves from others. This could affect someone's mental and physical health. However, there is no arguing that this year’s carnival will have some effect on people regarding COVID-19.
