DHS Cross Country team competes in Wildersville meet

The Dyersburg High School Cross Country team ran in Wildersville on September 8, for their second meet of the season.

Out of the 120 boys that ran in the competition, the Dyersburg team makes up only three of those competitors. Though the team is small, this does not stop Coach Marty Newsom from implementing new strategies to better their season.

The team’s practices start with a half-mile warm-up jog and dynamic stretches. This is followed by a 3-5 mile easy, moderate, or hard run depending on the day, and then finishes with a half-mile cooldown and static stretches. The assistant coach Hoyt Newsom, Coach Newsom’s son, works with the team on their distances and increasing their speeds.

Marty Newsom said that she was excited to get the first meet, and all of the jitters that come with it, out of the way. She was also excited to see how they run, to learn who they are as runners and where they can take the results from today to the next meets of the season.

She noted the boys’ perseverance, how they do not give up, and seeing them figure out how to be their best on their own. “That’s what I like about running,” Marty Newsom said, “They get to set and analyze goals for themselves.”
