COVID-19 cases spike countywide

On October 19, Dyersburg City Schools Director Kim Worley announced that Dyersburg Middle School would move to Phase 1 beginning on Tuesday, October 20.

According to Worley, there is no an outbreak of COVID-19 at the middle school, but a large number of teachers are currently being quarantined.

“Our goals continue to be the health and safety of our students and staff and the continuity of learning for our students. Unfortunately, it has become necessary for Dyersburg Middle School to move to Phase 1 instruction from Tuesday, October 20 - Friday, October 30. There is no outbreak of COVID-19 at DMS,” Worley said in a statement to the State Gazette.

Since the expiration of the Dyer County facemask mandate on September 28, Dyer County has averaged just under 30 cases per day. From September 29 – October 18, a total of 608 new COVID-19 cases were reported, and total new cases increased by 28 on Monday, October 19.

This led the state to report an all-time record for new confirmed cases as well as a record for hospitalizations.

The Tennessee Department of Education reports the following data for both Dyer County and Dyersburg City school systems as of October 13: Dyer County Schools had eight new cases of COVID-19 among students last week and less than five new cases among staff; Dyersburg City Schools reported a total of less than five cases across the school system last week.

Dyersburg High School continues to remain in a modified Phase 2 despite rising cases.

The graph lists the COVID-19 data for Dyer County prior to, during and following the county-wide mask mandate from March 19, 2020 through October 18, 2020. According to the data obtained from the Tennessee Department of Health, Dyer County has averaged nearly 30 new cases per day since the end of the mandate.
