Conor McGregor v. Dustin Poirier

Reporter

The second Conor McGregor v. Dustin Poirier fight was held at Fight Island, January 23.

The fist fight between the two in 2014 resulted in a round one knockout win for McGregor. However, the stakes for the second fight were higher, considering the winner of the fight would advance to fight Justin Gaethje for the lightweight title. The lightweight title was left vacant when reigning champion Khabib Nurmagomedov retired upon the death of his father early this year.

McGregor and Poirier both arrived at the ring around an hour before the bell; the fight kicked off at 10 P.M. Poirier attempted to work in his clinch/calf kick in the first round, whereas McGregor stuck to his signature striking. However, things picked up in the second round when Poiriers calf kicks started to take effect and slow down McGregor.

Eventually McGregor was pushed back to the edge of the cage. Poirier seized his opportunity and attacked McGregor with a barrage of punches that ultimately resulted in the ref waving off the fight. Poirier secured the victory via TKO 2:32 seconds into the second round.
