For most people in our community, April means it is finally spring. They look forward to the sunny days, the warm nights, riding with the windows down, fishing… you name it. But for some student-athletes at DHS, April means that baseball and softball season is in full swing. Both teams began playing games a month ago in early March and have a month until the regular season ends in May. Midway through the season both the Trojans and Lady Trojans are performing at a high level.

The Trojan Baseball team is on a roll with 13 wins and 4 losses. Some key wins on the season include a 2-1 win over Dyer County and a 3-0 win over St. Bede Academy (a prep school in Illinois). Two of their 4 losses come from district foes Dyer County and Crockett County in close games. The other two losses come from region foes Munford and #7 ranked Covington. The Trojans’ role has been fueled by offense, averaging 10 runs per game and having one of the top-ranked offenses in the state according to MaxPreps. Sophomore catcher Alex Page leads the team in hits with 25. Junior first baseman/pitcher Breyden Turnage leads the team in batting average, hitting .490 on the year. Senior second baseman Taylor Dunn leads the team in RBIs with 20. The Trojans’ defense is led by their ace Jake Stanley. The sophomore lefty has started 5 games on the mound, flexing a 4-0 record with a 1.167 ERA and 36 strikeouts while giving up only 8 walks. The Trojans’ have a 1-2 district record with 5 district games left to play. Their next district series is this Monday and Tuesday where they will play a home-and-home series against #4 ranked South Gibson.

The Lady Trojan softball team has a lot in common with the baseball team. They flex a 9-3 record with their only three losses coming from district foes Dyer County, South Gibson, and Crockett County. Their best wins were against region foes Brighton with a score of 6-2, and Munford with a score of 11-3. They also defeated USJ 8-4. Their offense is led by Sophomores Chelby Jordan, with a .350 batting average, and Izzie Odom, with a .333 batting average. Junior Addie Gatlin has been on the rubber often for the Lady Trojans, pitching 45 innings and having 32 strikeouts. Senior Alli Alford and Sophomore Izzie Odom have also seen a lot of time on the rubber. Alford has pitched 28 innings with 27 strikeouts and Odom has pitched 18 innings with 14 strikeouts. The Lady Trojans’ next match-up is Friday at home against Trinity.
