Art club builds gingerbread houses in annual contest

Breeanna Brooks - Reporter

The Art Club decorated an array of gingerbread houses on December 5. Several options for decorating were given, such as frosting in piping bags, candies, and gingerbread, of course.

Art teacher Sara Myint also created other gingerbread creations, most notably the one built around librarian Cindy Elkin’s desk in the library. Cut-out gingerbread men and women were also constructed to inhabit the house, all dressed up in varying outfits.

But the edible houses were assembled right in the art room. All of the abodes featured unique decorations put together by the students.

“I made a sort of seat out of Hershey’s with little snow people, and then I made a chimney with marshmallows as smoke,” senior Jaylin Rice said.

Many distinctive features were built onto each house, such as a ladder made out of Twizzlers, a large covering of frosting and marshmallows meant to resemble snow and even a mini gingerbread garage.

The building of gingerbread houses has been a tradition that is still in the making for Art Club.

“This would be our third year,” Myint said.

In the end, all of the houses were judged based on the three mystery criteria revealed at the end of the meeting: originality, use of triangles, and detail. The three winners were all rewarded with Hershey’s for their hard work.
