On October 13, Apple revealed the new iPhone 12 variants in Cupertino, California. At first glance, the phones seem very identical to Apple’s iPhone 11 variants; however, rest assured that there is much more to this phone than meets the eye.

Apple showcased the 3 different iPhone issues it will be releasing. These products included the iPhone 12 ($799), iPhone 12 Pro ($999) and iPhone 12 Mini ($699). The regular iPhone 12 serves as the standard option, in between the price and ability of the Pro and Mini. The iPhone 12 Pro is a more expensive option with the best performance and features out of the variants. The iPhone 12 mini acts as a smaller, more affordable option with fewer features than both the normal 12 and Pro variants.

The iPhone 12 products relatively have the same outerwear design. However, they have different bodies from their iPhone 11 predecessors. The new iPhone 12 products feature non curved sides, different from Apple’s more recent designs. The iPhone 12 Pro sports the colors pacific blue, gold, silver and graphite; whereas the iPhone 12 and 12 Mini colors include black, white, red and navy blue.

One of the biggest features in the newer iPhone generations have been the phones’ picturetaking abilities. And as to be expected, the new iPhone 12 variants have significantly improved upon the previous generation’s camera capabilities. The iPhone 12, and now the 12 mini, will continue to sport dual cameras with improved “ultra-wide angle” lenses. All the iPhone 12 variants will incorporate a new night mode for those frustrated with previous generations inability to take clear pictures in the dark; the new night mode will capture 27% more light in dark environments allowing for a clearer and brighter picture.

However, Apple's most substantial camera improvements lie in the abilities of the iPhone 12 Pro. Apple’s 12 Pro will sport a triple array camera with improved lenses. This means Apple’s 12 Pro will sport all of the camera features of the iPhone 12 and 12 Mini, with slight improvements to each. The phone will also feature a new Lidar System; this Lidar system will allow users to create a depth map of the surrounding pictures. This new system would allow 3-D mapping apps to create augmented reality shots through the camera.

Most will be disappointed to hear that all the iPhone 12 variants will not come with a charger or earphones. All chargers and accessories will be sold separately. The 12 issues will have the ability to wirelessly charge.

However, many will be excited to hear the new 12 variants will sport a MagSafe accessory system. The MagSafe accessory system will use magnets to adhere accessories to the back of the phone. So far, the only “brand name” accessories revealed from Apple have been wallet backs and charging carriers. However, expect that many 3rd party companies will develop more accessories for iPhone 12 products in the future.

All of the iPhone 12 products were released for sale to the public on Friday, October 23.
